Cowgirls Host Colorado Christian on Education Day
Tip-off is 11 a.m., Friday
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 20, 2024) – The Wyoming Cowgirls return home for their annual Education Day game Friday as they host Colorado Christian. Tip off from the Arena-Auditorium is set for 11 a.m.
Friday’s game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (1-3) is coming off a hard-fought loss on the road Sunday at Gonzaga. The Bulldogs pulled away in the last couple of minutes of Sunday’s contest for the double-digit win. Emily Mellema poured in a career-high 27 points against GU. Mellema, who went for 20-or-more points for the third time in her career, shot 10-of-18 from the floor and made 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The 10 made field goals are also a career-best for Mellema, who snatched four steals as well against Gonzaga.
Mellema is up to 13.8 points per game now on the season, second-best on the Cowgirls. Her 11 steals and 2.75 steals per game both rank fourth-best in the Mountain West on the young season. Allyson Fertig continues to lead UW in scoring with 16.8 points per game, which ranks sixth-most in the league. Fertig’s team-leading 10 rebounds a contest is second in the league, as is her three blocked shots per game. Those blocks are the 10th-most in the nation. Ola Ustowska leads Wyoming with 3.3 assists per contest.
Fertig continues to climb up the all-time rankings in program history. With her 10 rebounds at Gonzaga, Fertig moved into sixth-place on the career rebounding list, surpassing Marie Kauffman (1989-92). Fertig also moved into third on the all-time blocks career list and now has 163 as she surpassed UW Hall of Famer Hanna Zavecz (2005-08). Mellema sits just outside the top-25 in career assists with 206 and career steals with 97.
SCOUTING COLORADO CHRISTIAN
Colorado Christian is led by Maggie Hutka’s 15.5 points per game. Hutka, who is averaging five free throws made per game, also leads the Cougars in rebounding with 9.8 per game and has a team-high 13 assists. Victoria Perez is second on the squad and also averages in double figures with 10.8 a contest. Perez leads the team with seven steals and has 10 made 3-pointers. Dasiya Jones’ eight boards per contest is second on CCU.
The Cougars are scoring 60 points per game and are allowing 64.5 a contest. CCU is shooting 37.3-percent from the field and 29-percent from 3-point range. Colorado Christian opponents are shooting nearly 44-percent overall and is hitting 33-percent from beyond-the-arc. Colorado Christian has a plus-2.3 rebounding margin and has committed 10 more turnovers than its opponents this season. Friday will be an exhibition for the Cougars. They are 0-1 in true road games on the young season.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST COLORADO CHRISTIAN
Wyoming won both previous meetings in the series, with each contest coming in Laramie. The Cowgirls won 70-31 in the last regular season meeting with the Cougars in the 2019-20 season opener November 6. McKinley Dickerson scored 13 points off the bench in that contest in her first-career game with the Cowgirls.
