Third set tiebreakers prove costly for Wyoming
LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 16, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls battled all day, but dropped a 4-1 match in the end at home to Nevada. The Cowgirls lost a pair of third-set tiebreakers on the day, proving to be the difference in the loss.
Wyoming, like it did Friday, pulled out a hard-fought Doubles Point against the Wolf Pack. The Cowgirls were able to snag wins at the No. 1 and 2 doubles spots. The team of Violetta Borodina and Dilnaz Mashabayeva continued their strong play together in 2025, winning at No. 1, 6-4. The duo improves to 10-3 overall this season as a pair and are now 4-0 in dual matches. At No. 2, the tandem of Eugenia Ceinos and Elena Trencheva won 6-4.
Nevada swept singles play, winning at positions one through four. The Cowgirls lost a pair of heartbreaking tiebreaks at No. 1 and No. 4. Borodina’s comeback at the first position fell just short, as she lost 4-6, 6-1 and 6-7 (4-7). Ruby Young came up on the wrong end of a 3-6, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) comeback bid.
UW now shifts its sights on the road for the first time during conference play next week. The Cowgirls travel to face San Jose State at 1 p.m., Mountain Time Friday before facing Fresno State Sunday at the same time.
