Cowboys in Second Week of Fall Camp — Pokes wear full pads in week two

LARAMIE, Wyo.  (August 5, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys entered the second week of fall camp on Monday with full pads for the first time. The Pokes are 23 days away from the season opener at Akron.

What Head Coach Jay Sawvel Had to Say

“We got work done today and we have progress still to make, but it has been physical all the way through. We have to keep it going. We are 23 days away from playing a game and I like where we are on August 5th, but we have to be better down the line on August 28th. We are pleased with what we have been getting so far.”

Cowboys Return Experience on Defensive Line

The Cowboys return experience along the defensive line with defensive end Tyce Westland along with interior tackles Ben Florentine and Jayden Williams.

In 2024, Westland appeared in 11 games with six starts with five coming to close the season. He recorded a career-best 41 tackles and is the top returning tackler for UW. He had 18 solo stops and 23 assisted tackles. He also added six tackles for loss to rank third on the team. Westland added three sacks to rank second on the Cowboys a season ago.

Williams appeared in all 12 games with one start in 2024. He recorded 28 total tackles with 14 solo stops and 14 assisted tackles. He also added 1.5 tackles for loss. Williams recorded a career-high seven tackles at Colorado State. He had five assisted stops in that contest. 

Florentine appeared in and started 11 games for the Cowboys last season. He finished the season with 25 total tackles for a career best. He had 10 solo stops and 15 assisted tackles. He also added three tackles for loss and one sack. He recorded a career-high seven tackles for the Cowboys in a win over Air Force.

 

Game Time for Season Opener Announced

The University of Wyoming announced the kickoff times for two home contests for the 2025 Cowboy Football season on Tuesday. Wyoming will open the home schedule against Northern Iowa on September 6 with kick slated for 2 p.m. UW’s home finale against Nevada is set for Noon on November 22.

The contest against UNI will be a Gold Out of War Memorial Stadium as fans will get their first look at the recent renovations to the iconic home of Cowboy Football with the venue turning 75 years old this season.

Television information for the two contests will be announced in the near future.
