Cowboy Football Enters Final Week of Spring Practice

LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 22, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys entered the final week of spring practice on Tuesday with the 13th practice of the spring inside War Memorial Stadium. The annual spring game will take place this Saturday starting at Noon in The War. More information on the free event will be released later this week.
What Head Coach Jay Sawvel Had to Say
“I thought we had a good finish to today. I thought we were a little flat and we got everyone together and the last hour of practice was good. We have had a good spring and today we needed a pick me up and we got that. We have guys that need to play a game and that is what we are going to do this Saturday. We need to play in front of fans, we need to feel it like a gameday all the way through and we need a final exam in front of fans, and we will be ready to go.
Pokes Have Hybrid Scrimmage Last Saturday
The Cowboys hit the field for their 12th practice of the season last Saturday in the Indoor Practice Facility. The Pokes went just over two hours and featured a scrimmage portion of practice going around 90 minutes.
“It was good to get so much live work in and have some scripted situations to do. We got some true goal line work because sometimes when you put the ball down in a scrimmage you don’t get all those things covered. We wanted to have a blitz period and it is sometimes important to do that and it is live because the offense gets the ball out and you have to make that tackle and as an offensive player you have to break a tackle.”
Sandvik and York Leads Special Teams
The Cowboys will see a pair of veterans on special teams. Carson York will enter his final season as long snapper for the Brown and Gold, as he has started since his freshman season. He has appeared in 38 career games with five total tackles.
Erik Sandvik, a sophomore has been with the program for three seasons and will look to take over the kicking game after the graduation of all-time leader in scoring at Wyoming John Hoyland. He graduated as UW's all-time leading scorer (366 points) after making 73 of 92 field goals (79.3%) and 147 of 148 extra points (99.3%) over the last five seasons. A native of Steamboat, Colo., Sandvik has connected on field goals from as far as 61 yards in practice.
