The Newcastle City Council decided on Dec. 20 to leave the open council seat vacant for the 2022 calendar year. The seat was held by Michael Alexander, who resigned on Nov.  1.
According to Mayor Pam Gualtieri, after only two people submitted their names to fill the seat — both after the advertised Dec. 3 deadline — the council decided that leaving the seat vacant was the best option. The two who submitted their names were Corey Pillen and Holly Borton.
The council will operate for most of 2022 with just five of its usual six members.
“Because of the late submissions, and there is nothing that says we have to fill the seat, we are going to leave the seat vacant for the 10 meetings until the election,” Gualtieri told the News Letter Journal.
