Absolute truth in a relativistic world

Pastor Mick Bohn

Do you believe in absolute truth? God’s word tells us this in John 14:6. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.“ Here is absolute truth speaking to the people of his day in the person of Jesus. The only absolute truth there is comes from the word of God. In John 1:1, we read this about Jesus: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. “  Then in John 1:14 it is written: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” Folks, this is referring to Jesus and since He is the Word of God and the Truth, that tells me that discerning truth starts with knowing the word of God.

Pontius Pilate asked Jesus this question: “What is truth?” And all the while he was looking right at the Truth. We live in a world where the majority of people want to determine their own truth, so they say, “What’s true for you is not necessarily true for me.” But here is the truth, there is only one truth, not your truth and my truth. Something we all must understand about truth is that it never changes and always is true. It doesn’t matter where it is spoken or what year it is or what people group it is spoken in; truth is always truth. Adultery is always wrong, murder is always wrong, stealing is always wrong, etc. Billy Graham said, “Truth is timeless. Truth does not change from one age to another, from one people to another, from one geographical location to another. Men’s ideas may differ, men’s custom’s may change, men’s moral codes may vary, but the great all-prevailing truth stands for time and eternity.” What we believe to be true may be relative, but the truth is absolute.  …

Friends, here’s a question for you: How does a person who doesn’t believe in absolute truth make moral decisions?  One of the results of not having absolute truth guiding a person’s life is they open themselves up to deception as can be clearly seen in the whole transgender debate. Absolute truth is found in Genesis 1:27: “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. “ There are only two genders and that’s the truth.

Deception is something that we all must be aware of and on guard against in the world we live in. The deception in the mainstream media about the 2020 election is out there. The deception about babies in the womb being nothing but blobs of tissue is out there. The deception that America is a racist country is out there. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that everyone needs absolute truth to make good and godly decisions. May each and everyone of us spend the time necessary in God’s word so we can know the absolute truth.
