POWELL (WNE) — A 5-year-old boy in Cody was shot in the abdomen on Tuesday, when his 9-year-old brother negligently discharged a firearm, police say.

The incident occurred around midday, while the boys were in a vehicle parked at KT’s Sinclair gas station in downtown Cody. The boys’ mother took the injured 5-year-old from the station to Cody Regional Health, where he’s received “a positive prognosis,” the Cody Police Department said in a news release.

“It’s looking positive,” Lt. Juston Wead said Wednesday afternoon.

Police haven’t released specific details about what happened as they continue to investigate the incident.

Wead did say there’s no indication the shot was fired intentionally, and the release added that the boys’ parents “have been fully cooperative.”

In a Tuesday Facebook post, KT’s Sinclair said the impacted family didn’t deserve any rude comments or rumors.

“Please pray for the family involved,” the business wrote.
