Casper teen accused of “shooting up” two homes in three days
CASPER (WNE) — A Casper teen faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and battery and misdemeanor property damage — but not murder, as his intended target was at a hearing in Denver, according to court documents in an Aug. 9 shooting on Center Street.
Marquis Hayman, born in 2005, could face more than 10 years in prison and a $750 fine.
Although the shots were fired on Aug. 9, the suspected target didn’t call police until just before noon the following day when he returned home to find bullet holes in his bedroom wall, according to an affidavit filed in circuit court.
Footage from the night of the incident shows a male who “came up near [the victim’s] residence and fired two shots into the south-facing window of the home,” according to the affidavit.
Two family members told authorities they believe the would-be target knows the shooter’s identity but didn’t tell police because he didn’t want to be labeled a snitch.
A witness also told officers Hayman bragged about shooting up the home, using the believed target’s rap name to refer to the home.
Police also suspect Hayman in a shooting that occurred three days later. In the second incident, for which Hayman was actually arrested first, police say he opened fire on another teen’s Durbin Street home on Aug. 12 while people were sleeping inside.
In that case, Hayman reportedly told his driver that the gun he was using was “hot,” which “meant the gun had been used in another shooting recently,” the affidavit said.
According to court documents, Hayman claims affiliation with the “Sun Drive Gang “ in messages to friends. However, Casper Police Department Public Information Officer Amber
Freestone says the group does not meet the department’s requirements to be considered a gang.
Hayman is in custody, and his bail is set at $100,000. His next court date is set for Sept. 30.
