Casper man pleads not guilty to stabbing of minor

CASPER (WNE) — A Casper man charged with aggravated assault in connection with the March 21 stabbing of a minor pleaded not guilty in district court on Thursday morning.
Evan Kirkendall faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, if convicted.
Authorities allege Kirkendall beckoned the 17-year-old into his home under the pretense of a fair fight before stabbing him.
Kirkendall’s attorney, William A. Appleton, Jr., indicated to prosecutors before the hearing that the question of self-defense would be raised in future proceedings, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Blaine Nelson, who appeared on behalf of the state.
Kirkendall appeared before the court in a black zip-up turtleneck sweater, baggy jeans that rested on the ground below his feet and with ruffled bleached-blond hair.
He entered a not guilty plea on his own behalf, as his attorney on record, Appleton, did not attend the arraignment.
Kirkendall’s case was bound over to district court on April 25. His next appearance will likely be a scheduling conference to determine an appropriate date for the trial.
His $50,000 cash or surety bond was continued at his arraignment, which he posted.
