For one 7-year-old boy, an ordinary fishing trip quickly turned upside down on May 5 when he lost his tackle box at Black Elk Pond. This was no ordinary tackle box, however, according to Kati Dean, mother of Callan, because Callan won this tackle box in a fishing contest, which was also at Black Elk Pond.
After Callan lost the tackle box, Dean immediately posted a picture of it on Facebook and asked for it to be returned if anyone had picked it up. Dean said she hoped that if someone had taken the box without knowing whose it was, they might return it. Callan said that he was quite concerned about the loss, and he hoped that someone had his prize possession and would return it to him safe and sound.
Little did Dean and her son know that her Facebook post would get over 500 shares, along with numerous offers to replace the tackle box, according to Dean.
“I was really shocked. People were just so helpful,” Dean said.
However, Dean said that she didn’t expect any of those offers and didn’t accept them until Scheels, a sporting goods store in Rapid City, emailed her. Scheels had heard about the lost tackle box and said that it would replace it. The store advised Dean that the tackle box with Callan’s name on it would be waiting for pickup at the customer service desk at the store.
“I was so excited,” Callan said.
After Callan received his replacement, he found additional items stowed inside the tackle box, according to Dean. There were lures, T-shirts and hats. Callan, who has been fishing since he was 3 or 4 years old, said he is very excited to put his new tackle box to use.
One thing that stood out to Dean, she said, was the support of the people in the community and their hope to reunite a boy with his tackle box.
“I just really want to thank the community and thank Scheels,” Dean said.KateLynn Slaamot
