Campbell County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard hosts American flag on nationwide journey

GILLETTE (WNE) — Tuesday afternoon, dozens of Campbell County residents were reminded of what the flag of the United States America truly means.

The Flag Sojourn 250 made a stop in Gillette Tuesday. It was launched at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on June 14, 2025. The flag was presented to the American Battle Monuments Commission and began its journey in Europe. In October, the flag returned to the United States to be presented to the National Sheriffs’ Association for its travel throughout the 50 states.

Wyoming was the 31st state to host the flag. It will make its way to Washington, D.C. on July 4.

The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard raised and lowered the flag in a ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Scott Matheny said the flag represents not just the past, but a "call to action" for the present.

"It challenges each of us to reflect on what we can do to strengthen our community, to respect one another,” Matheny said.

It stands for an “idea that is still being written every day,” he added.

"At its core, the American flag stands for freedom,” he said. “Freedom of speech, freedom of belief and the freedom to pursue one’s dreams…it stands for equality, the idea that every person deserves dignity and opportunity.”
