Building Our Faith on Christ’s Cornerstone

Our faith must be built on the solid foundation of Christ, our cornerstone. Discover how Scripture calls us to grow in spiritual maturity, standing firm in His truth.
As believers in Christ, we are called to build our lives on a foundation that is strong and secure. Just as a building needs a solid base to stand tall and withstand the elements, our spiritual lives require a firm foundation to grow in maturity and faith.
The apostle Paul reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians that our foundation is built on the teachings of the apostles and prophets, with Christ himself as the cornerstone. In Him, we are joined together to form a holy temple, a dwelling place for God's Spirit. This image of a building rising and being strengthened speaks to the continual growth and development of our faith as we build upon the truth of God's Word.
“Having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:20-22)
In his letter to the Colossians, Paul urges us to continue living our lives in Christ, rooted and built up in Him. Just as a tree draws nourishment from its roots, we are called to draw strength and sustenance from our foundation in Christ, growing in maturity and overflowing with thankfulness for the grace we have received.
“Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” (Colossians 2:6-7)
The writer of Hebrews challenges us to move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and strive for maturity in our faith. We are encouraged to build upon the foundation of repentance, faith, and the knowledge of God’s word, pressing forward toward a deeper understanding of Christ and His redemptive work.
“Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of teachings about washings and laying on of hands, and about the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. And this we will do, if God permits.” (Hebrews 6:1-3)
In Peter’s letter, we are reminded that we are like living stones being built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood offering sacrifices to God through Jesus Christ. This beautiful picture of unity and purpose illustrates the importance of standing firm on the foundation of Christ’s teachings and living out our faith in community with other believers.
“And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a choice stone, a precious cornerstone, And the one who believes upon Him will not be put to shame.’” (1 Peter 2:4-6)
As we continue to grow in spiritual maturity, may we find strength in our foundation in Christ, rooted in His love and grace. May we stand firm in the face of trials and challenges, knowing that our faith is built on a solid rock that cannot be shaken. With Christ as our cornerstone, we can confidently build our lives upon the sure foundation of His Word, growing in maturity and becoming a beacon of light and hope to the world around us.
