Boot camp inmate dies

Tyler Austin Lane, 22, an inmate in the Wyoming Youthful Offender Program (boot camp) died
unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept. 27. The Wyoming Boot Camp Program operates on the grounds of
the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle, according to the press release on Lane’s death. 
Lane was sentenced in July by an Albany County district court judge and was serving 14-20 years for aggravated homicide by vehicle and was
recommended for the boot camp program. 
According to the release, Lane was pronounced dead at Weston County Health Services. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation by the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, according to Newcastle Police Chief Jim Owens. 
“The Newcastle Police Department did the initial investigation and turned the case over to DCI,” Owens told the News Letter Journal. 
Mark Horan, public information officer with the Wyoming Department of Corrections, stated that in addition to the external investigation, the agency would be performing an internal administrative review of the incident. He noted that this is standard practice for any unexpected inmate death. 
“As a measure of cooperation, we do not want to speculate on the cause of Mr. Lane’s death,” Horan said. 
Louie Williams, DCI’s team leader for the northeastern region, reported that DCI has officially taken over the case and are currently waiting on autopsy reports regarding biological and toxicology reports before determining cause of death.
