A severe winter storm seemed to strike all around Newcastle without unleashing its might on the city itself last week, but the severe cold and wind that did impact the community may have contributed to the death of a local man.
During the morning hours of March 14, Officer Peg Miles with the Newcastle Police Department responded to reports of a deceased body located near the Mondell Heights retirement community, 106 E. Main Street, according to Police Chief Jim Owens.
“A lady came to the dispatch window at 0643. Peg Miles was in the office and responded directly,” Owens said.
The discovered body, according to County Coroner Cynthia Crabtree was Newcastle’s Clifford Pedulla, age 56. The cause and nature of his death is yet to be determined.
“The cause of death is under investigation at this time,” Crabtree said.
She was unwilling to provide any further information to the newspaper at press time, but temperatures in Newcastle on the evening of March 13 and the early morning hours of March 14 dropped below freezing and were accompanied by a reported sustained wind speed of 44 miles per an hour, with gusts over 60 miles per hour recorded.
