The Bible isn’t boring

Many people quietly think the Bible is boring. They won’t always admit it, but when the book sits on the shelf collecting dust, their actions speak loud enough. The problem is not with God’s Word. The problem is how we read it.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” That doesn’t sound boring. That sounds powerful. The Bible only feels flat when we treat it like a dry textbook instead of what it really is — the living voice of God.

The first step is to open the Bible with expectation. Do we believe God will actually speak? If we approach it half-hearted, we will walk away unchanged. But when we open its pages with faith, even a single verse can stir the heart.

We also need to read it in context. A verse pulled out of thin air may not seem like much. But when you step back and see the story — the people, the setting, the way God moves — it comes alive. Suddenly, you’re not just reading ink on a page; you’re seeing the hand of God across history.

The Bible must also be read relationally. It’s not about gathering facts. It’s about knowing God. Every page shows us His character — His holiness, His mercy, His patience, His love. The more we read, the more clearly we see Him. And when we see Him, the Word becomes alive to us.

James 1:22 reminds us, “Prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers.” The Bible grows dull when we only hear it and never live it. But when we obey — when we forgive, when we trust, when we serve — the words leap off the page and into our lives.

That’s why prayer is so important. Before we read, we should pray, “Lord, open my eyes.” 

Jesus promised that the Spirit would guide us into truth (John 16:13). Without the Spirit, the Bible looks like just another book. With the Spirit, it burns like fire in the heart.

The Bible is not boring. It is the voice of the living God. If it feels dull, maybe the problem is not with the Word, but with how we approach it. Don’t just skim it. Don’t just know it. Read it to hear God speak. Read it to know Him. Read it to obey. And you’ll find that His Word is alive, sharp, and more powerful than you ever imagined.
