In Jeremiah 23:21, we find a clear warning about the dangers of false prophets: "I did not send these prophets, but they ran. I did not speak to them, but they prophesied." This verse reminds us that not everyone who claims to speak for God is genuinely sent by Him. False prophets lead people astray, causing confusion and leading them away from God's truth.

The Bible repeatedly warns us about the presence and influence of false prophets. In the Old Testament, God condemned those who spoke lies in His name. Jeremiah 23:16-17 says, "Thus says the Lord of hosts, 'Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you. They are leading you into futility; they speak a vision of their own imagination, not from the mouth of the Lord. They keep saying to those who despise Me, 'The Lord has said, "You will have peace"'; and as for everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, they say, 'Calamity will not come upon you.'"

This passage shows how false prophets tell people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. They offer false assurances and ignore the reality of God's judgment. In contrast, true prophets deliver God's message faithfully, even when it is difficult or unpopular.

In the New Testament, Jesus also warned about false prophets. In Matthew 7:15, He said, "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves." This imagery highlights how deceptive false prophets can be. They appear harmless and trustworthy, but their true intentions are dangerous and destructive.

The Apostle Peter echoed this warning in 2 Peter 2:1, saying, "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves." False teachers can infiltrate the church, spreading harmful teachings that undermine the truth of the Gospel.

To protect ourselves from false prophets, we must be rooted in God's Word. Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans for their diligence in examining the Scriptures daily to verify the truth of the teachings they received: "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so."

By studying the Bible and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can discern the truth and recognize false teachings. 1 John 4:1 advises us to "test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

In conclusion, Jeremiah 23:21 serves as a powerful reminder to be vigilant and discerning. False prophets can lead us away from God's truth, but by staying grounded in Scripture and seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance, we can protect ourselves from deception and remain faithful to God's true message.
