The deadline to submit special dates for the community calendar has been extended until Oct. 31. The community calendar has been around longer than most can remember, and after a brief hiatus the Lions Club partnered with the News Letter Journal two years ago to once again create the community minded calendar. 
“It’s always been a fundraiser for the Lions Club,” Leonard Nack, club member, said, noting that the calendar aids in the bonding of locals because it creates “a sense of community.” 
The calendar, according to Kim Dean, managing editor at the News Letter Journal, depicts the daily life of the community by highlighting birthdays, anniversaries, meetings, events and any other special date or occasion locals want to share with others. 
This year the Weston County Arts Council has also taken a role in the production of the community calendar. This year’s calendar will be slightly different than previous years because the community was invited to submit photos for a photo contest highlighting life in Weston County. According to the Arts Council, more than 40 entries were received. The involved entities will come together to judge the photos based on set criteria, including technical execution, originality, expression of theme, and overall impact. Categories for the contest were Community, Kid-friendly, Industrial, Ranching/Cowboy, Landscape and Wildlife. Winners will be announced at a later date.
Printed on glossy pages featuring photography by these local photographers, the calendar holds a traditional feel in an age when birthday and other greets have become less tangible through digitalization. Dates listed on the calendar are also featured in the News Letter Journal weekly and read aloud on KASL radio. 
Listings are $1 apiece, or six for $5, with each additional listing after six for 50 cents. If you purchase a calendar for $12, or $10 from a Lions Club member, you receive six free listings. 
According to Dean, these high-quality, locally created calendars cost less than other calendars of similar quality. This really is the best way to keep up to date with local happenings and your neighbor’s birthdays and anniversaries, she said. 
Calendar orders, along with dates for the calendar, should be submitted by Oct. 31. But don’t worry; if you miss ordering your calendar there will be extras available for purchase for gifts or for yourself. 
“Guarantee your spot in the community calendar by stopping by the News Letter Journal or by contacting a Lions Club member to order one,” Dean said.
