Avoid Sitting at Tables the Lord Would Have Overturned

As a believer in Christ, it is crucial to evaluate the influences and environments we immerse ourselves in. There are moments when we might find ourselves in situations that contradict the values and teachings of Jesus. Reflecting on the story of Jesus cleansing the temple, we are reminded of the importance of aligning our lives with God's will and avoiding settings that would grieve His heart.

In Matthew 21:12-13, we read, "And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. And He said to them, 'It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbers’ den.'" This powerful image of Jesus flipping tables underscores His zeal for purity and righteousness. The temple, meant to be a place of worship, had been turned into a marketplace, defiling its sacred purpose.

Just as Jesus cleansed the temple, we are called to examine the tables at which we sit in our own lives. Are we partaking in activities or associations that dishonor God? Are we compromising our values for the sake of convenience, comfort, or acceptance? It's easy to find ourselves entangled in situations that seem harmless on the surface but ultimately lead us away from God's intended path.

The Apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in 2 Corinthians 6:14-15, saying, "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?" Paul warns us about forming close bonds with influences that can corrupt our character and hinder our spiritual growth.

Furthermore, Proverbs 4:14-15 advises, "Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way." This wisdom encourages us to proactively avoid environments and associations that could lead us astray.

Instead, we should seek out tables where Christ is honored, and His presence is felt. Psalm 1:1-2 provides a clear contrast: "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night." When we prioritize God's Word and surround ourselves with godly influences, we strengthen our faith and grow closer to Him.

In conclusion, let us be mindful of the tables at which we choose to sit. By aligning our lives with God's principles and avoiding environments that contradict His teachings, we honor Him and cultivate a deeper, more authentic relationship with our Savior. Remember, it is better to stand alone in righteousness than to sit comfortably in compromise.
