Are We Misleading Our Children
When we teach children about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy alongside Jesus, we risk blurring the line between reality and fantasy. If children are told that these beloved characters are real and then later learn that they are make-believe, they may begin to question whether Jesus is also a fabrication. This confusion can undermine their faith, leading them to doubt the truth and significance of Jesus if we do not make a clear distinction between fiction and the foundational truths of Christianity.
It is wrong in many ways to lie, lying clearly taught as wrong in the Bible. Parents often instruct their children not to lie, yet they perpetuate these fictional stories. This inconsistency can create a troubling disconnect. If children are led to believe in these make-believe characters as real and then discover the truth, they might extend this skepticism to their understanding of Jesus, wondering if He, too, is a lie.
The Bible emphasizes the importance of teaching children the truth of God’s Word and ensuring that they understand the difference between fictional stories and the truth of the gospel. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, God commands parents to teach their children diligently about His commands:
“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
This passage highlights the need for consistent and clear teaching about God's Word. It underscores the importance of presenting biblical truths in a way that clearly distinguishes them from stories and myths. Teaching about Jesus should be approached with the same seriousness as the eternal truths of the Bible, rather than as one story among many.
In Proverbs 22:6, the Bible offers guidance on how to raise children in the faith:
“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
This verse suggests that foundational teaching in a child’s early years is crucial. It indicates that instilling the truth of God’s Word can have lasting effects, helping children grow into adults who firmly believe in and live by these truths.
As we guide children in their understanding of Jesus, it’s important to emphasize His reality and significance in their lives. Unlike fairy tales and myths, Jesus is the Son of God who lived, died, and rose again for our salvation. Jesus Himself spoke of the reality of His mission and purpose. In John 14:6, Jesus declares:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)
This statement asserts the truth of Jesus’ role in salvation and emphasizes that He is the embodiment of truth and life. Teaching children about Jesus should focus on His real impact and His promises, making it clear that His presence in their lives is not imaginary but the most important reality they can know.
Considering these considerations, it's important for parents to be honest with their children. While imaginative stories can be a fun part of childhood, they should not blur the line between truth and fiction. By being truthful about these stories and clearly presenting Jesus as the ultimate reality of our faith, parents can help their children grow up with a clear understanding of what is true and significant. It’s essential to foster an environment where honesty is valued, and the truth of Jesus is presented with clarity and sincerity.
