Councilman Michael Alexander is leaving his seat on the Newcastle City Council after the council accepted his resignation on Nov. 1.
“I and my family are in the midst of moving to a house that is technically outside of city limits, and this is the sole reason for my resignation; if not for this, I would be happy to continue to serve out my term,” Alexander told the News Letter Journal.
He added that he feels fortunate he was able to serve the community.
“The main reason I feel this way is that I was able to work alongside and get to know some great people. I was routinely impressed at the wisdom and unique knowledge those on the council and those working for the council brought to the various issues faced by the city,” Alexander said. “I have no doubt that the mayor and council, including whomever they chose to fill my seat, will continue to serve as very capable stewards of the city.”
Anyone wishing to fill Alexander’s seat has until Dec. 3 to submit a letter of interest at the city office. Interested parties must live within city limits.
Advertisements, according to City Clerk-Treasurer Greg James, will run in the News Letter Journal for at least two weeks.
He said that it is “very likely” that the council will follow a procedure similar to that for past vacancies.
The council will invite applicants to attend a council meeting and answer questions posed by the council. After hearing from applicants, the council will choose Alexander’s replacement.
Letters of interest can be turned in to the city office at 10 W. Warwick.
