What Is Eternal Life?

Most Christians would answer that question by saying, “Living forever,” “Going to heaven,” or “Escaping hell.”

But that is not how Jesus answered it.

“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)

Think about that.

Jesus did not define eternal life as living forever.

He did not define it as going to heaven.

He did not define it as escaping hell.

He did not define it as receiving blessings.

He defined eternal life as knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ.

Many people treat eternal life as a destination. Jesus described it as a relationship.

The goal of the gospel is not merely to get people into heaven. The goal is to bring people back to God.

That raises a difficult question.

Do you want the gifts, or do you want the Giver?

Many people want forgiveness, blessings, peace, protection, and heaven. Yet the greatest gift God offers is Himself.

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.” (Psalm 73:25)

The Bible does not point believers toward a place as their ultimate treasure. It points them toward a Person.

The goal is not merely to escape hell.

The goal is not merely to go to heaven.

The goal is not merely to receive eternal blessings.

The goal is God Himself.

Jesus settled the matter: “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)

Knowing God is more than knowing facts about Him. It is a relationship that begins when we repent, place our faith in Jesus Christ, and follow Him. The more we walk with Him through His Word, prayer, and obedience, the more we come to know the One who gave us eternal life.
