Two arrested in undercover LCSO sex trafficking operation
CHEYENNE (WNE) — Over the weekend, detectives with the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office conducted an undercover reverse-sting operation targeting the demand side of human sex trafficking, a primary driver of the crime, an LCSO news release said.
The operation focused on identifying individuals seeking to purchase sexual services from vulnerable women.
Human sex trafficking is a form of modern- day slavery that exploits vulnerable individuals through force, fraud or coercion. While much attention is often placed on traffickers, law enforcement agencies across the country recognize that consumer demand fuels the trafficking industry.
By targeting those who seek to purchase sex, investigators aim to reduce the market that traffickers rely upon to exploit victims and generate profit. These enforcement efforts also help identify potential trafficking networks and create opportunities to connect victims with services and support.
The operation resulted in the arrests of David Drehbol and Christopher Miller, both of Cheyenne. Both were charged with soliciting an act of prostitution. Additionally, Drehbol was charged with possession of marijuana. He is also a registered sex offender with a prior 2007 conviction for unlawful sexual contact under Colorado Revised Statute 18-3-404.
The operation was conducted in support of the Sheriff’s Office’s strategic goals and marks the first enforcement action of this type in Laramie County in several years.
Sheriff Brian Kozak said in the release, “Human trafficking is not a victimless crime. The demand for commercial sex creates opportunities for traffickers to exploit vulnerable individuals, including those struggling with addiction, homelessness, financial hardship and abuse.
“By targeting those who create that demand, we are working to protect potential victims, disrupt trafficking networks, and make Laramie County a safer place for everyone.”
