Preparing for Home

One day believers will dwell with God forever. We will see Him, worship Him, serve Him, and enjoy His presence throughout eternity. If that is our future, should we not be preparing for it now?

The Christian life is not merely waiting for heaven. It is learning to walk with God before we get there. It is learning to love what He loves, hate what He hates, delight in His presence, obey His commands, and pursue holiness. We are not earning a place in heaven. We are being shaped for the life that awaits us.

Scripture says, “Like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written: ‘YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.’” (1 Peter 1:15–16)

Many believers think of holiness as a list of rules. Scripture presents it differently. Holiness is becoming more like the One we belong to. God is holy, and His children are called to reflect His character. Every time we choose obedience over sin, truth over error, or faith over fear, we are being conformed to the image of Christ.

The writer of Hebrews gives a sobering reminder: “Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)

That does not mean holiness saves us. Christ alone saves. His death and resurrection are the only foundation of our salvation. But those who belong to Him are changed by Him. The same grace that forgives also transforms.

Perhaps part of the purpose of this life is preparation. Not preparation for salvation, but preparation for fellowship with God. Every prayer, every moment spent in His Word, every act of obedience, and every battle against sin is teaching us to desire the One we will spend eternity with.

Jesus said, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)

Notice that eternal life is not described merely as a destination. It is knowing God. That relationship begins the moment a person is saved and continues forever. Eternal life does not start when a believer dies. It starts now.

That raises an important question. If a person has no desire for God now, no interest in His Word, no concern for holiness, no longing for His presence, what exactly are they looking forward to in eternity? The greatest treasure of heaven is not the streets of gold or the gates of pearl. The greatest treasure of heaven is God Himself.

John wrote, “And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:3)

The more a believer thinks about being with Christ, the more that hope affects how they live. A future with God should produce a desire to walk with God today.

One day faith will become sight. One day every struggle against sin will end. One day we will stand in His presence forever. Until then, believers should be preparing for home.
