NWS confirms EF-2 tornado touched down near Savageton
GILLETTE (WNE) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado touched down near Savageton Monday afternoon, damaging a house that was under construction.
A supercell thunderstorm developed near the Bighorn Mountains and went southeast through Campbell County, producing severe hazards between Savageton and Wright before moving into Converse County, according to a press release from the National Weather Service.
The tornado touched down at about 2:31 p.m. Monday, reaching wind speeds of 115 miles per hour. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado traveled 12.7 miles and had a maximum width of 600 yards.
Large hail – some as big as golf balls – was reported, and a wind gust of 81 mph northwest of Savageton was recorded.
The tornado ripped through a house near Black and Yellow Road. Fire Marshal Stuart Burnham said no one was living in the home, which was under construction, and there are no reported injuries.
