Hand Count

To the Editor:

Weston County residents are demanding an immediate and permanent switch to hand counting all ballots to restore trust and transparency in our elections, as the current electronic voting machines can no longer be updated, rendering them un-certifiable and a direct liability to the county. 

These outdated machines caused serious miscounts and ballot errors in the 2024 general election that required hand recounts, eroding public confidence and exposing the county to ongoing risks of inaccurate, unverifiable results.

Hand counting ballots openly, with bipartisan observers, provides a simple, reliable solution that allows community members to verify every vote together and eliminates hidden errors from failing technology. 

Residents are urged to contact the Weston County Commissioners immediately by email (commissioners@westongov.com) or individually: NTodd@westongov.com, vhuber@westongov.com, mrmrsedwyo@westongov.com, mertman@westongov.com) to voice strong support for hand counting, or attend the public meeting at the Weston County Courthouse, 1 West Main Street, Newcastle, on Tuesday, April 21, at 9 a.m. to speak during public comment.

Your participation helps protect fair, observable, and trustworthy elections for Weston County. Hand counts will restore trust in our elections.
