Great Gardens earns national recognition from HGTV
TORRINGTON (WNE) — A Torrington greenhouse is getting some national attention this summer. Great Gardens, located at 4706 U.S. Highway 26/85, was named Wyoming’s entry in HGTV’s “52 Must-Visit Garden Centers and Plant Shops Across the Country,” published May 29 on hgtv.com.
The list spotlights one standout garden center from every state.
HGTV noted Great Gardens serves eastern Wyoming, the Nebraska panhandle and parts of northern Colorado. The greenhouse draws customers with a wide selection of annuals but also carries perennials, roses, trees, shrubs, vegetables and herbs, including hard-to-find varieties.
The HGTV feature highlights the range in particular; Great Gardens stocks 60 varieties of tomatoes, 65 different peppers, 14 types of cucumbers and 10 varieties of basil. It is open year round.
Owner Jeff Jones said HGTV reached out about three weeks before the list was published, asking him to answer a handful of questions about the business for a feature on notable garden centers nationwide.
“They called me totally out of the blue,” he said. Jones answered HGTV’s questions and sent photos the same day, working against a short deadline on their end. Afterward, he said, he nearly forgot about it.
“I had no idea this was what they were doing,” Jones said of the finished list, which he didn’t see until HGTV emailed him a link the Friday before it went live. “I was extremely happy and excited to see that’s exactly what they were doing.”
This is Jones’ 18th year owning Great Gardens, though the greenhouse itself has operated on the same property for 48 years. Jones is the third owner of the business, which was previously known as Hein’s Greenhouse.
