Wyoming Hosts N.M. Highlands Monday in a Battle of Cowgirls

Wyoming looks to extend winning streak
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 3, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirls host the middle contest of their current three-game home stretch Monday night as New Mexico Highlands comes to town for a 6:30 contest.
Monday’s game will be broadcast live on both AT&T SportsNet and the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming is looking for a season-best third consecutive win against New Mexico Highlands. The Cowgirls are coming off a hard-fought 67-59 victory Friday night over Montana State. Allyson Fertig led the way with a season-high 16 points in the win while also pulling down seven rebounds. Quinn Weidemann, meanwhile, hit four 3-pointers on her way to a 16-point night in the win.
Malene Pedersen and Ola Ustowska both added nine points on the night. Ustowska, along with Tess Barnes, had great all-around nights for the Brown & Gold. Ustowska dished-out a career-best six assists against the Bobcats while Barnes added a career-high eight points, grabbed four rebounds and tallied four assists. As a team, the Cowgirls notched a season-high 16 assists, as well as hit a season-best nine 3-pointers.
On the year, Weidemann is up to a team-best 13.1 points per game and is shooting 40-percent from 3-point range, has a team-high seven steals, as well as hit a team-best 20 free throws. Grace Ellis is also in double figures so far this season for UW, coming into Monday averaging 10.7 points per on 52.-6-percent shooting from the field. Fertig, meanwhile, is nearly averaging a double-double as she is at 9.9 points and nine boards per contest.
IN THE RECORD BOOK
Weidemann is fifth all-time at Wyoming in made 3-pointers with 214 makes and is eighth all-time in attempts with 523. Her career 3-point percentage of .409 is fourth all-time among Cowgirls while her 85.8-percent career free-throw percentage is tied for fourth all-time. Weidemann’s 258 career assists are 17th in program history and her 1,205 career points are 18th-most. Weidemann also continues to climb toward the top of the record book in career games played, as her 124 appearances are tied for sixth in program history. Senior guard Tommi Olson has a career-high of nine steals in a game, which is tied for the most in a single game in school history. Olson’s 153 career steals are 10th all-time at Wyoming and her 295 career assists are 13th all-time.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS
The Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands enter Monday’s contest at 7-1 overall after suffering their first loss of the season Saturday at Chadron State. Highlands is led by a trio averaging in double-digit scoring in 2022-23 in Juliana Aragon (13.8), Krystina Hagood (11.4) and Delani Harris (10.2). Hagood is second on the team in rebounding at 6.2 per contest whiel Aragon’s 18 assists are second on the team. Rachael Niles leads the team with 20 assists this season while Neysa Munguia has a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game.
As a team, New Mexico Highlands is averaging just under 65 points per contest while holding opponents to a 59-point clip. The Cowgirls are shooting 39-percent overall from the field and have hit 31.2-percent of their 3-pointers. Highlands opponents are shooting just under 35-percent and 30.4-percent from beyond-the-arc. NMH’s lone common opponent with Wyoming is Colorado Christian, who they beat 74-66 Friday. UW defeated CCU in an exhibition earlier this season, 68-36. Highlands is led by Head Coach Garett Sherman.
Monday’s contest will be the first between the two schools. The two were supposed to meet in November of 2019, but that game was cancelled due to poor weather around the Laramie area.
