On Nov. 19 and 20, a group of Newcastle High School students traveled to Buffalo to participate in the Northeast District Honor Choir Clinic. A total of 13 students attended, nine of whom belonged to the choir and four members of the band. In order to be selected for participation, the musicians had to be nominated by their teachers, with final approval by a board.

“This an extremely prestigious honor and not everyone got to be here” said Elizabeth Keen, the head choir clinician.

The kids prepared five pieces chosen by Keen on their own time. Typically, the clinic includes a day and a half of rehearsal, followed by a concert on the second day to which the community is invited. Of the nine choir students, three were basses, three were sopranos, and three were altos, with their individual parts encompassing the higher and the lower ends of each vocal range.

“The kids were really well behaved, and they connected well with Mrs. Keen. The concert went really smoothly and the kids did great!” choir director Jan Ellis said.

“It was nice to be out and doing things again, a clinic wasn’t held last year due to COVID-19, so it was awesome to be back!” said Ryan Whipple, band director. He also gave kudos to the kids on their behavior and said that they represented NHS wonderfully.

“When the kids are that hard-working, and well-behaved, it makes our job so much easier,” Whipple added.

Although fewer in number, the four band students worked just as hard to prepare their material. Both band and choir performed on the same day.

“It was really cool to be in a choir of such other talented singers,” senior choir member Isabella Spencer said.
