From the pulpit: Believe it or not!

By

There once was a show called “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” that featured extremely unusual characters or situations that were often beyond belief. There’s something that fascinates us when we see or hear about something that challenges our human reasoning.
For instance, I am not as fascinated by how a Rubik’s cube is solved as much as I am fascinated by how it is made – how it can be manipulated in multiple ways without coming apart. But a quick internet search satisfied my curiosity: The central cubes are fixed with a spring and rivet and retain all the surrounding pieces. The spring exerts just the right pressure to hold all the pieces in place while giving enough flexibility for a smooth and forgiving function.
While this is just one example, there are many things in life that we simply do not understand to the degree we wish we did. We try to figure out riddles, puzzles and brain teasers and often become frustrated when we are not able to solve them.
But if we finally figure it out, often with an internet search, we have an “aha” moment that is both exhilarating and humbling; humbling because we realize how simple it really was.
This is how it can be with our understanding of God.
Most people have some idea about who God is but are intimidated by him. In the Gospel of John 6:45, Jesus has this to say to a crowd: “It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.”
This is truly “good news” (Gospel) for us because we cannot understand God unless he chooses to teach us about himself by his Holy Spirit through his word, the Bible.
No Google search will ever suffice to teach us what we need to know about God unless his spirit opens our spiritual understanding.
So, if you are curious about God or desire to know him, the answer is simple: Humble yourself and ask him to reveal himself to you in his word by his spirit. Then make the time to read his word and watch for him to answer your prayer!
It truly is that simple – believe it
or not!
