Learn more about the proposed chicken ordinance

Mark Williams

To the Editor:

I attended the Newcastle City Council meeting last eve, Sept. 6. The chicken ordinance was discussed a bit with input from the very few folks in attendance who were pro-chicken.

I very strongly suggest if you are in favor of backyard chickens that you go to the city office and ask for a copy of the proposed ordinance and look it over. There is a provision for a $100 a day fine for being in violation of the ordinance, and a couple of other restrictions that will get your attention. Be mindful this is a proposed ordinance and has yet to become law. Your input is necessary.

On Oct. 6, the planning/zoning board will be reviewing the proposed ordinance from city council. That is the time to make changes to the ordinance before it goes back to the city council for a vote. If you are for backyard chickens, that is the time to show up and speak up yet again.

The very best information site I can recommend for Wyoming communities which allow yard chickens is backyardchickens.com. It is a site dealing with Cheyenne, Cody, Casper, Gillette, Buffalo, Rawlins and Laramie. These communities allow yard chickens. You can read the ordinance of each city mentioned that allow chickens. Please get the copy of Newcastle’s proposed ordinance and read those other city ordinances.

Backyardchickens.com is also full of useful information on caring for chickens. Your input on Oct. 6 will be very helpful.

Thank you,

— Mark Williams
