LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 18, 2023) – Following their first home dual of the season, the Wyoming Cowboy Wrestling squad is back on the road this weekend for a pair of Big 12 duals against top 20 opponents. On Saturday, the Pokes will head to Fargo, North Dakota to face No. 14 ranked North Dakota State. They will follow that up by facing No. 16 ranked South Dakota State in Brookings, South Dakota on Sunday.

“This is another opportunity to see 2 Top 20 teams who have wrestled extremely well this season.” Head Wrestling Coach Mark Branch Said, “With that, they have some outstanding individuals, and we are excited to have these opportunities to knock off some ranked opponents”

The Cowboys will be up against a ranked opponent for their fourth straight dual after coming off of a tough outing against No. 7 ranked Missouri. While the Pokes dropped the dual to the Tigers, three Wyoming grapplers picked up wins led by No. 25 Jore Volk (125) who pulled upset over No. 12 Noah Surtin for his first career ranked win.

On Saturday Wyoming will face a NDSU lineup that features eight ranked wrestlers led by Jared Franek who is ranked second at 157 pounds. Franek will go up against No. 13 ranked Jacob Wright who sports the highest ranking of any cowboy in the lineup. Wright will be searching for a statement win over Franek after falling t him last season in a dual meet which the Bison won, 22-14.

Sunday’s dual against No. 16 SDSU will be another tough test as the Jackrabbit lineup boasts seven ranked wrestlers. There are two ranked matchups projected for Sunday’s dual starting with No. 25 ranked Volk facing No. 26 ranked Tanner Jordan. Volk will look to keep his momentum rolling and earn the second ranked win of his career. At 157 pounds, there will be a ranked rematch when No. 13 Wright faces No. 23 Cael Swenson, the two grapplers have already met once this season squaring off in the finals of the Soldier Salute where Wright came away with a 4-3 victory to claim Soldier Salute title.

Saturday’s meet against No. 14 NDSU is set to start at 6 p.m. MT while action for Sunday’s meet against No. 16 SDSU is to begin at 11 a.m. MT. Live video for both meets will be on FloWrestling with live stats available on track wrestling.
