On Sept. 14, U.S. District Court Judge Nancy D. Freudenthal sentenced Russ Jay Welch Jr., 47, of Osage, to 27 months in prison. Welch pled guilty to one count of counterfeiting and forging obligations or securities of the United States and aiding and abetting.

On April 11, Welch was arrested, along with James Watkins of Missouri, after a search warrant was executed at 793 Sackett Ave. in Osage. The search warrant was the result of an investigation stemming from individuals using counterfeit monies in Newcastle.
