Many events took place in the music department during March, which was “Music in Our Schools Month,” to extend appreciation for the music arts in our schools, according to vocal music instructor Jan Ellis.
One such event was the middle school music festival in Upton on March 17. Including two branches, this festival featured choral performances that were judged by Nathan Gillette, a music teacher in Riverton. The instrumental performances were judged by Zach Tolman, an instrumental music teacher, also from Riverton. Middle school students performed either solos or group pieces, which students rehearsed for six to eight weeks. They then received advice to help them improve, as well as assessments on how they performed.
Eighth-grader Nickalena Schantle sang a solo at this event for the third time. She had received an excellent rating when she was in sixth grade and received a superior rating in both her seventh- and eighth-grade years.
