Bette Sample will send off the Newcastle High School Class of 2018 at the Crouch Auditorium during the graduation ceremony on Sunday at 2 p.m. Forever a No. 1 fan of her students, Sample said she is happy and touched to be asked to speak. Candi Stanton, the class of 2018 sponsor and a teacher at the high school, extended the invitation to Sample, a retired Weston County School District One teacher and principal.
“The opportunity to share my heart with the Newcastle High School Class of 2018 means more to me than my words can ever say,” Sample said. “I just want them to be lights in the world.”
Sample began teaching at age 22, and she taught for 30 years, 10 of which were as the elementary school principal. She has continued her involvement with students as a substitute teacher since her retirement in 2006. The class of 2018 was in kindergarten during Sample’s last year as principal of Newcastle Elementary School.
