Hundreds flock to Newcastle for high school event
Local rodeo contestants got a rare opportunity to take center stage last weekend when the Newcastle High School Rodeo Club hosted a junior high rodeo on Friday and followed it up with high school action on Saturday and Sunday.
Weston County’s young cowboys and cowgirls took advantage of that opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a home crowd, and a number of them claimed prize money after the dust settled on the arena.
Upton’s Thomas Davis and Newcastle’s Teigen Marchant led the way in that regard. Davis posted the top ride in both rounds of bareback riding to secure first place in the average after scoring a 76 on Saturday and 71 on Sunday to beat the second place finisher by more than ten points. Davis also took third place on both days in steer wrestling to secure third in the average in that event, and teamed with a partner from Jackson to claim a ninth place finish in the first round of team roping.
