Officials at Newcastle Elementary School have begun the application process for becoming a Title I School rather than continuing to use a Title I targeted program. Principal Brandy Holmes informed the Weston County School District No. 1 board of trustees on Nov. 8 that the school had reached a level, based on the number of free or reduced lunch
children enrolled, that allowed the school to apply for Title
Title I is a federal program, part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, that provides financial assistance to schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Schools qualify for Title I status if 40 percent, or more, of enrolled students qualify for free or reduced lunches.
