Mark E. Casavan 68, of Spearfish passed away September 1, 2017 at his home on the Red Water River North of Spearfish, SD.

Mark was born on February 22, 1949 to Harvey and Marie (Weiss) Casavan of Red Lake Falls, MN. Mark attended school in Red Lake Falls until his freshman year when he attended NW School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN. After completing the Ag program he returned to Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls, MN and graduated in 1967.  After graduation Casavan attended cosmetology school in Thief River Falls, MN. In 1970, he attended Molar Barber College in Fargo, ND.

On August 1, 1970 Mark married Joette Schue in Red Lake Falls, MN. To this union two children were born, Nicole Marie and Marc Aaron.

In January 1971, Mark accepted a job at Midway Barber Shop in Sturgis, SD. In March of 1973, he purchased Bill’s Barber Shop located in Spearfish, SD, which he changed the name to Mark’s Old School Barber and Style Shop as it remains today. Mark loved his clients and enjoyed visiting with all of them. During his career Mark gave many “first haircuts” to multiple generations. In 1997, his son, Marc joined the family business. They worked side by side for many years. Mark was proud of his son, he always said that “Marc runs the business better than I ever did.” Mark retired in 2007 and sold the business to Marc. Although retired, Mark was more than happy to fill in as needed.

In 1989 Mark met Lori Cooper and her daughter, Mahri. On July 9,1995 they were married in Spearfish, SD. Mark raised Mahri as his own

Mark was fortunate to have many lifelong friends, there was nothing he would not do for any of them at any time. He loved them all the same. Jim and Sue Sanders, Jerry and Patsy Hood, Harlan and Barb Schmidt, Jim Allison, Randy Harms, Frank Pavlich, Roger Eisenbraun, Jason Schmit, Shane Blakney, Brian and Lynley Mehmen, Trampas and Kendra Meininger. Mark enjoyed his daily visits at Queen City Motors. Mark loved and was friends with all the employees. He would stop in to say hi to his wife, Lori, and to his great friend and golf partner Randy. Mark never missed talking to Lori Evans, his favorite political pal and his favorite salesman, Wayne Miller.

Mark and Lori enjoyed wintering in their beautiful home in Queen Creek, AZ. Mark spent his days golfing and living the dream, enjoying every day to the fullest. Mark and Lori enjoyed hosting their family and friends.

Mark’s greatest loves were hunting, trapping and fishing with his son Marc, who at four years old was always at his side. Mark enjoyed his poker times with Harlan Schmidt and Jerry Hood. Mark and Harlan hardly missed a day playing poker in Deadwood during the summer months

In January 2000, Mark had quadruple bypass surgery and in 2004, after a slight heart attack, he had a stent placed. In 2007, he had prostate cancer and received treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He fought hard through all these adversities and rarely complained. Mark was a member of Sturgis and Spearfish Jaycees. He was also a member of the Spearfish Fire Department and was an Honorary Retired Member. Also a member of Spearfish Chamber of Commerce. Mark was a major supporter of the Green and Gold and BHSU Yellow Jackets along with Spearfish High School Spartans.

Mark is survived by wife Lori, children Nicole Casavan, Marc (Melaynee) Casavan, and Mahri (Nate) Fredericksen; grandchildren, Tegan and Aria Fredericksen, the joys of his life; mother, Marie Casavan, Red Lake Falls, MN; siblings, Bonnie (Dean) Audette of Cedar, MN, Monte (Heidi) Casavan, Red Lake Falls, MN, Tracey (Steve) Casavan of Spearfish, SD, and his loyal canine companions Zurie and Van Helsing; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Harvey Casavan.

A celebration of life service was held Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 12-4pm at The Courtyard Barns at Frawley Ranch 20353 S. Hwy 85, Spearfish, SD.
