David Sherman Dean

Oct. 16, 1960-May 13, 2017

David Sherman Dean, 56, of Custer, SD passed away unexpectedly on May 13, 2017 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

David was born Oct. 16, 1960 in Hot Springs, SD to Everett and JoAn (Pond) Dean, the second of five children.

When David was 10 months old, the family moved to Northern California where his father worked as a logger and commercial fisherman. As a young boy, he loved roaming the shores of the ocean, and camping in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where the family would stay at Ruth Lake every year in July. In 1972, the family moved to Northern Idaho.

Dave always had a tough inner spirit. For his 12th birthday, he received a lever action 30/30 and his first bear license. While separating from his Dad and brother on a hunt, he shot and killed an 8’ black bear alone on Fourth of July mountain pass. He attended school in Silverton, and completed his education at Grandpa’s School of Hard Knocks. David formed a special bond with his Grandpa Milton Dean, where he learned many skills centered around trucking and logging. Nearly every day after school, he and his brother would fix flat tires on his father’s logging truck. Dave would eventually hone these skills and carry on a legacy as a fourth-generation family logger.

Logging was the reason for the family’s next move to the Newcastle, WY area in 1976. He married Shelley Holwell in 1978, and to this union Jason, Leah, and Justin were born. The family mainly lived in Newcastle, and also resided in Northern Idaho for six years where Dave worked in the trucking and logging industries. In 1993, he received a driving award while working at Nelson Logging and Trucking in Priest River, ID.

He later met Karen and they were married on October 15, 2015, in Custer, SD where they currently reside.

David was a hard worker, and quite handy; fixing, building, and painting cars for himself and many others. He was a “Ford” man, and enjoyed rebuilding and painting many car projects that he shared with his children, including a 1967 Cougar, and a 1957 Ford pickup. He enjoyed racing, dirt bikes, hunting and fishing. Dave lived life fully, and liked to have fun. He will be remembered for having a big heart, helping others, and for being a friend to everyone he met.

A visitation will be Thursday, May 18 from 5-7 p.m. at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer, SD. Services will be Friday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at Chamberlain McColley’s with Pastor Sam Thomas officiating, and burial will follow at the Pringle Cemetery in Pringle, SD.

David is survived by his wife, Karen Dean of Custer, SD, son Jason (Erin) Dean and daughter Leah (Mike) Starling, both of Newcastle, son Justin Dean of Rapid City, SD, stepsons Lynndon Prang of Rapid City, SD and Zach Burke of Hermosa, SD, four grandchildren Natalie-age 6, Hanna-age 4, Anna-age 3, and Ella-8 months; parents Everett and JoAn Dean of Oral, SD, brother Everett (Kim) Dean and sister Sandra (Jeff) Shuck, both of Newcastle, sisters Ruth (Jerald) Frasier of Keystone, SD and Lisa (Russ) Frasier of Oral, SD, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and a band of logging brothers. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Milton and Thelma Dean.
