Council talks school officer

Over the next 12 to 18 months, Police Chief Jim Owens would like to see the Newcastle City Council  move toward providing a school resource officer in the schools in Newcastle. During the city’s strategic planning meeting on Feb. 26, Owens said that the social environment in the country is changing, and that an SRO with police experience is an option for protecting the students in the community.

Owens told the council that he would like to see the SRO considered during the upcoming budget session and, at the latest, see an officer assigned to the schools in the next 12 to 18 months.
