For the Veterans

NLJ Staff

Local veterans will have no lack of support coming their way this Veterans Day, although most of the celebrations will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the day after the official Veterans Day.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I, according to Congress passed the resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday in 1938.

Veterans Day is a day to honor the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Locally, veterans throughout the community will be recognized and praised during several events including a free veterans breakfast the morning of Nov. 12 at the Weston County Senior Center and a Veterans Day program in the Crouch Auditorium at 2 p.m. that day. Also taking place on Veterans day is a meal at VFW Post 2516 at 6 p.m.

This year’s Veterans Day program will feature music performed by the choirs and bands from both Newcastle Middle School and Newcastle High School. The program will also include guest speaker Patricia L. Bennett who is currently the Clerk of the Wyoming Supreme Court.

The school district is inviting the entire community to join them for this special program, especially the veterans and families of those who have served for this country.

Here at the News Letter Journal, we have dedicated that back section to honoring and sharing the stories of several local veterans through essays written by students from Newcastle High School and through the story of the forgotten memorial at the Greenwood Cemetery.

We want to encourage those in the community, whether you personally know a veteran or not, to show your support for those who chose to fight for our country and serve in the military over the years. Attend the program, recognize their sacrifice and say a thank you, not just on Veterans Day but everyday.

Those 18.2 million living veterans in the United States deserve to hear our gratitude for the life they chose not only on Veterans Day but whenever the chance arises.
