End of three-game homestand
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 9, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirls close their current three-game homestand in a Sunday matinee as Kansas City comes to Laramie for a 1 p.m., contest. The contest is Wyoming’s final non-conference home contest.
Sunday’s game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (5-3) is on a current three-game winning streak and is coming off an impressive defensive showing against New Mexico Highlands December 5, in an 80-24 victory. The 56-point margin-of-victory was the ninth-largest margin in a single game in program history. The 24 points allowed were the fewest since 2019 (22 vs. Miss. Valley State) and the eighth fewest ever.
Grace Ellis and Quinn Weidemann both led the way with 13 points in the win over Highlands. The duo combined to go 10-for-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Marta Savic recorded a career-best and game-high 10 rebounds off the bench in the win while Bailey Wilborn scored nine points off the bench, a high for her while at Wyoming. Another newcomer, Grace Moyers, scored her first-career points in the Brown & Gold. All 12 of the Cowgirls that suited up in the game, scored.
Weidemann continues to lead the way at 13.1 points per game this season and leads the team with 19 made 3-pointers and 20 made free throws. Weidemann is shooting 42.2-percent from 3-point range and is also second on the team with seven steals. Ellis, meanwhile, is shooting a team-best 56.5-percent from the floor and is 10-of-17 from 3-point range. Allyson Fertig is nearly averaging a double-double this season, as she enters Sunday averaging 9.9 points and nine rebounds per game. Fertig also has a team-best 11 blocks.
As a team, Wyoming is averaging nearly 65 points per game and is allowing just 52.5 a contest, a mark that ranks third in the league and 21st in the country. The Cowgirls’ defensive field goal percentage of 35-percent is second-best in the Mountain West, as is their 3-point percentage defense (25.8-percent). UW’s 1.27 team assist-to-turnover ratio is second in the conference.
SCOUTING KANSAS CITY
Kansas City enters Sunday’s contest at 3-6 overall and has a 1-4 mark in road contests in 2022-23. The Roos average nearly 66.6 points per game on the season and are shooting 41.4-percent from the field while their opponents score at a near-73-point clip and are shooting 42.3-percent overall and 34.7-percent from beyond-the-arc. KC is averaging nearly 41 rebounds per contest and is recording over 5.5 blocks per contest as a squad.
Individually, Kansas City is led by Utah State transfer, E’Lease Stafford, who is averaging nearly 19 points per game on 44-percent shooting. The Roos have two other student-athletes averaging in double-figures in Sanaa’ St. Andre (16.5 ppg) and Rain Green (11.3). St. Andre also leads the team with 35 assists and 20 steals.
