Cowgirls drop home contest to Air Force

UW got singles wins from Lucia Malinak and Sophie Zehender
LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 3, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team lost in a home matchup with Air Force Sunday afternoon, dropping the contest, 4-2.
The Cowgirls (8-9, 2-2 MW) dropped a hard-fought doubles point to the Falcons (14-4, 3-1 MW) to fall behind early in the match. Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play as a duo this spring, as they won at No. 2 doubles, 6-3. Air Force secured the doubles point after pulling out a 7-6 (7-5) win at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Wyoming got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 as Zehender and Lucia Malinak won at those spots, respectively. Zehender moved to a perfect 4-0 in Mountain West play and 9-2 in dual action with her 6-4, 6-3 win over AFA’s Sydney Fitch. Malinak, meanwhile, registered her first conference result of the season in a three-set victory over Alexis Odom. Set scores went 6-4, 4-6 and 6-1. Malinak improved to 6-4 this spring.
UW looks to rebound now next week with a trip out to Las Vegas. The Cowgirls will face San Diego State in a neutral-site matchup Saturday at 10:30 a.m., Mountain Time before closing the weekend against UNLV at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10.
