LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 28, 2023) – The Cowboy wrestling squad returns home this weekend as they welcome California Baptist to the UniWyo Sports Complex for a Big 12 matchup. Saturday’s contest will be the first-ever between the Cowboys and Lancers.
“Our backs are against the wall right now and we have no choice but to fight.  This can be a turning point for this team and we expect 10 guys to step on the mat looking to dominate their opponent.” Head Wrestling Coach Mark Branch said, “If you can’t get fired up and motivated about hosting a Big 12 team in the UNIWYO then you don’t need to be stepping out there.  It’s time to make a change and be ready to go to war!”
The Cowboys will be led into Saturday’s dual by true freshman standout Jore Volk who I currently ranked 16that 125 pounds. Volk holds a record of 15-6 on the season and is on a hot streak winning his last five matches including two wins over ranked opponents.
Joining Volk in Saturday’s lineup will be Jacob Wright who is ranked 11th at 157 pounds. Wright sits at 11-4 on the season having gone through an early season gauntlet of facing seven straight ranked opponents going 3-4 in that stretch. Wright is also chasing down the record books as he looks to eclipse the century mark in career wins with his current career win total sitting at 95.
California Baptist enters Saturday dual with an overall record of 1-9 and a Big 12 record of 0-4. After making the transition to Division 1 five seasons ago, the Lancers are now in their inaugural season of competing in the Big 12 conference.
While the Pokes and Lancers have never met in dual action before, they have run into each other twice this season at the Las Vegas Cliff Keen Invite and the Reno Tournament of Champions. In Las Vegas, Wyoming finished six spots ahead of CBU in the team standings and followed that up finishing second as a team at the Reno TOC.
Saturday’s dual is set to begin at 1 p.m. MT and will be live streamed on the Mountain West Network as well as on FloWrestling. Live stats will be available on TrackWrestling.
