Fargo, North Dakota (Jan. 21, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling squad opened their weekend road trip against No. 14 North Dakota State Saturday night in Fargo North Dakota. True Freshman No. 25 Jore Volk continued his hot streak at 125 pounds bumping his win streak to four, but the Cowboys dropped the dual, 3-32.
“We saw things that were encouraging but we didn’t have anyone out there tonight that wrestled a seven-minute match.” Head Wrestling Coach Mark Branch said, “We just need to take more pride in how we perform and I Know we can perform better than that and hopefully we will see that tomorrow.”
Riding a three-match win streak and coming off of his career ranked win, Jore Volk kept his momentum rolling against Ryan Henningson. Volk got his offense going early, picking up the only takedown of the match in the first period and closed out the period with a 2-1 lead. From there, Volk shut down Henningson, controlling him the rest of the way and adding on an escape and riding time point for a 4-2 victory.
In the only ranked matchup of the night No. 13 Jacob Wright faced off with NDSU’s No. 2 ranked Jared Franek. It was a nail biting match with neither grappler able to find any true advantage and after three periods the score was tied 1-1. In the sudden victory overtime period, Wright got in on two separate attacks but came up just short to No. 2 Franek losing 3-1.
The Cowboys will not take any rest as they now head to Brookings, South Dakota tomorrow, Jan. 22, to take on No. 16 ranked South Dakota State.
