Brookings, South Dakota (Jan. 22, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling squad capped off their weekend road trip against No. 16 South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon in Brookings, South Dakota. 125-pound standout and No. 25 ranked Jore Volk extended his win streak to five straight, but the Cowboys dropped the dual, 3-42.
“Jore looked a lot better today but he’s still learning and getting better with every match.  He dominated the match from start to finish and he’s doing the important things and he’s listening to us and its paying off.” Head Wrestling Coach Mark Branch said, “Bottom line is you don’t want to get used to losing and you don’t want to accept losing. We have been whipped a little bit lately and I haven’t been happy with our fight. We got to get mad about it and we have to want to change it. We need to hold ourselves to a higher standard and be ready to compete and win every time we wrestle.”
Coming into Sunday on a hot streak, No. 25 Volk put his winning streak on the line against No. 26 ranked Tanner Jordan. Volk set the tone early with a quick take down ending the first period with a 2-0 lead. In the second period Volk took full control of the match scoring a reversal on Jordan and building a 4-0 lead. From there Volk added on near fall and riding time points for a controlling 7-1 victory. Volk now moves to 15-6 on the season with two ranked wins in his last three matches.
Both Job Greenwood (141) and Jacob Wright (157) found themselves in tightly contested matches against top 25 opponents. Each grappler pushed their opponents to the brink, but came up short giving up late takedowns.
The Cowboys will now return home and prepare to host Big 12 foe California Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. inside of the UniWyo Sports Complex.
