The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and this time around the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department has had to ask for help to pay for the extravaganza.
Firefighters approached the city of Newcastle to request funds to help purchase fireworks for the show. Despite suggesting other ways the department could gather funds, the council agreed to provide $3,000 toward the cost of the annual show.
Fire Chief Donnie Munger told the council on May 21 that the council has put money toward the fireworks fund in the past, and this year the department needed financial help again.
“The last two years we haven’t had to come forward and ask,” Munger stated. “Normally, in the past I believe we have gotten $2,000 to $2,500, but Pinnacle Bank is putting on a concert and we are wanting a better show. I am asking for $3,000, if you can, but whatever you can give us will be appreciated.”
