Babe Ruth ball starts title defense

The Newcastle Longhorns began defense of their back-to-back Senior Babe Ruth state championships in Gillette on April 25, and in the first game of a double-header showcased some of the newly-minted Longhorns who had moved up from the Junior Babe Ruth ranks in the off-season.

According to team spokesman Jay Whitney, a pair of those newcomers — Peyton Tystad and Grant Darrow — split duties on the pitcher’s mound in the season opener, and benefitted from defensive contributions by Luke Harris and Cameron Williams to earn a 6-5 victory.

In a press release announcing the start of the 2018 campaign, Whitney said that the Longhorn veterans took the field in game two of the twin bill and cruised to a 6-0 win behind pitchers Ryan Oliver, Cam Quigley and Sawyer Roberson. Whitney told the News Letter Journal that only one Gillette base runner made it to second base in the entire contest.
